Gas-phase metal clusters and metal ion–ligand complexes exhibit a diverse array of structural motifs and size-dependent properties. These systems serve as valuable model platforms for exploring fundamental chemical bonding and reactivity at the molecular level. Detailed studies of such isolated clusters provide bottom-up insights into processes relevant to heterogeneous catalysis and materials chemistry, including but not limited to molecular activation at metal centres.
