Abstract:

The thesis is concerned with parochial patronage, recruitment of beneficed and unbeneficed secular clergy, and the quality of pastoral provision during the thirteenth century, with reference to the dioceses of Worcester and Hereford.

Chapter one examines the main characteristics of the dioceses and the ways in which these affected religious life, concentrating on the parish structure and the impact of war.
