Abstract:

Streptococcus pneumoniae (the “pneumococcus”) is a global pathogen responsible for nearly a million deaths each year in children under the age of five. The polysaccharide capsule or serotype is the primary pneumococcal virulence factor and is encoded by the cps locus.
