The amygdala is a brain structure located in the temporal lobe that coordinates a wide range of emotional behaviours, in particular fear responses. Neuroimaging studies in humans have shown that in patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and phobias the amygdala is hyper-responsive to emotional stimuli.
