Estimating the global distribution and burden of scrub typhus

Abstract:

Scrub typhus is a neglected vector-borne disease with substantial but underrecognized global health impact. Transmitted by chigger mites infected with the bacteria Orientia tsutsugamushi, the disease presents with non-specific febrile symptoms and is frequently underdiagnosed and underreported due to diagnostic limitations and lack of awareness.
