The thesis is set against the backdrop of literary Chinese as the cosmopolitan written language across East Asia and examines two contemporary literary Chinese writers in the ninth century: Ch'oe Ch'iwŏn from Silla Korea and Sugawara no Michizane from Heian Japan.
