In this study of the functional aspects of a complex behavioural system I have looked at three different aspects of the feeding behaviour of the Oystercatcher. I started by analysing the skilled feeding techniques of the adults, but I soon became interested in the development of these techniques in the young, and in the parental feeding system which is surprisingly different from that of other waders.
