Background: The world is at risk of epidemics of novel and reemerging infectious diseases. These may be national, regional or international as in the case of Nipah, African Viral Haemorrhagic Fevers, SARS and H1N1 respectively. It is crucial that public health and clinical research is conducted in such epidemics.
