Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal degenerative disorder of the corticomotoneuronal network characterised by motor neuron loss leading to progressive weakness and respiratory failure. There are no highly effective treatments. Survival is variable with a median of only 30 months from symptom onset, and limited understanding of the complex biology of disease progression.
