Background: Acute functional decline in care home residents is often assumed to be caused by urinary tract infection (UTI), although other causes are possible. UTI is itself challenging to diagnose in care home residents due to lack of classic symptoms and signs, cognitive impairment limiting a history, and urine incontinence complicating sample collection.
