Abstract:: A promising and novel solar concentrator design has been thoroughly investigated and optimised. A prototype concentrator based on this novel geometry was validated using ray tracing techniques. This ray tracing demonstrated the comparative performance of this novel concentrator in regards to equivalent parabolic dishes. Description:: Solar concentrators for small scale applications typically make use of parabolic dishes or approximations thereof. Fully three dimensional parabolic dishes are expensive to manufacture whilst approximations to these dishes, i.e. the compound parabolic concentrator, will either compromise the ability of the system to obtain a point focus or require additional supporting structures to hold the multiple mirror facets in place. This paper will present the novel geometry of a system of mirrors that produces a point focus whilst using two single curvature surfaces. The focusing abilities and tolerances to tracking errors of this novel system will be presented in comparison to parabolic dishes.

Description:: Solar cookers are generally of either box-type or make use of parabolic dishes, including approximations thereof. The former are cheap but operate at low solar concentrations and temperatures, whilst the latter often require complex mirror geometries and can be prohibitively expensive to manufacture. This paper will present the results from a field trial of a prototype solar cooker which use of a novel concentrator geometry to achieve high temperatures.
