Abstract:: Islam, its texts and lived practice, finds growing importance within the global discourse on bioethics, as there is an increasing Muslim population and burgeoning interest in biomedical research and biotechnologies in the Muslim world. The aim of this thesis is to assess if and how Islam influences the ethical decision making of researchers, REC (researcher ethics committee) members, guideline developers and Islamic scholars in the biomedical research context.

Description:: AbstractIslam forms the second largest religious affiliation across the world and very little study hasbeen done to explore its role in the context of research ethics. The majority of Muslims live inthe developing world and therefore can form a significant cohort for research as well as thosewho carry out research. Since Islam has generally encouraged the use of science, medicineand biotechnology as solutions to human suffering, it would be useful to assess its influenceon global and local (regional and national) ethical decision-making. This paper provides athematic review of the literature related to Islamic research ethics and research conductedin Muslim contexts. PubMed was searched with a basic Boolean search strategy using keyphrases: “(Islam OR Muslim) AND (ethics OR Bioethics) AND research.” A new database,the Islamic Medical and Scientific Ethics (IMSE) database developed by Georgetown University,was also searched. Searching in both databases yielded 505 articles, which were thenanalyzed for relevance. The review revealed eight overarching themes in the literature relatingto Islamic research ethics and research conducted in Muslim contexts. The themes include(i) ethical principles, (ii) complexity of the consent process involving married and singleMuslim women, (iii) the consent of minors, (iv) retention of genetic material and tissue, (v)religio-ethical challenges raised by global pandemics such as HIV (vi) scholarly deliberationssurrounding emerging medical technologies such as genetics and reproduction (vii)the emerging role of contextual scholars as authorities collaborating alongside Islamic textualscholars, and (viii) religious injunctions relevant to research. The literature as it relates tothese themes is summarized in this review. Although the application of Islamic principles isvaried and inconsistent, this review, revealing the importance of normative Islamic sourceswithin the research ethics discourse in the Muslim context, emphasizes the role of religionand religious authority in underlining research priorities, guidelines and conduct. Muslimscientists, researchers, ethicists, theologians and legal scholars need to address the questionspresented here using tools from within their own tradition to provide coherent guidelinesto enable researchers to engage in moral reasoning that is congruent with their own religioculturalvalues, while remaining consistent with the necessary international research governancestandards.Keywords: Islamic research ethics; research in Muslim contexts; Boolean search

Description:: This chapter will present an overview of why it is necessary to consider biomedical research ethics from the Islamic/Muslim perspective, in settings where Muslims may form a substantial proportion of the research participants or the researchers conducting trials. It will present a brief history of the historical and contemporary relevance of research ethics within the global bioethical discourse. The chapter will then offer a summary of the debates and themes relevant to biomedical research ethics from the Islamic perspective, emphasizing that this is currently an understudied area. Finally, the chapter will briefly provide a synopsis of a larger piece of research being carried out on this area by presenting the key considerations from an empirical study that assesses how Islam and its normative sources influence ethical decision-making, within the context of biomedical research, in Malaysia and Iran. This case study of female participants and research relating to intimate and domestic partner violence is a prism through which the importance of considering an Islamic perspective in biomedical research will be viewed. Islamic ethico-legal debates relating to wilayah, qiwammah, ta’ah and nushuz will be explained in relation to women’s participation in research. The chapter will conclude by reflecting on the evolving role of Islamic scholarship on debates relating to gender justice in Islam and the emerging role of female scholars. Finally the chapter will highlight the existing challenges and questions that need to be addressed, from within the Islamic bioethics discourse, for the latter discourse to be responsive to emerging ethical complexities of biomedical research.Read More: http://www.worldscientific.com/doi/abs/10.1142/9781783267507_0010
