Black hole binary formation and mergers in supermassive black hole discs

Following the first gravitational wave (GW) detection in 2015, there have now been 90+ detections of merging black holes (BHs). In this thesis, BHs embedded in the gas discs of supermassive BHs within active galactic nuclei (AGN) are studied as a potential astrophysical source of these detections.
