The Marcham excavations archive
- Documentation:
-
The eleven seasons of excavations at Marcham (aka Frilford), 2001-2011, comprised more than forty trenches and produced a nationally important collection of structures and material culture. The unusual Iron Age enclosures are overlain by a stone-built Romano-British temple, and a remarkably well-preserved unusual arena (theatre/amphitheatre hybrid) together with several shrines. Material culture included c. 250,000 sherds of pottery, c. 22,000 pieces of animal bone, over 2,500 Romano-British coins and over sixty copper-alloy brooches. The site records comprise information on thousands of contexts and c. 4,500 excavation photographs.
Following the excavation fifteen years of post-excavation recording, cataloguing and analysis have produced this data archive giving access to all data files (over 160 spreadsheets) and a variety of reports (over 100 pdfs) which should enable a good understanding of the site and its development through time. This also enables the re-use of these data to facilitate new research into later prehistoric and Roman Britain.
