Population pressure and inadequate land management systems have led to deforestation over most of the dry zones of the African continent. Without trees, soil fertility declines, nutritious fodder and forage species cannot be sustained and agricultural production of crops and livestock are drastically reduced. The solution to this problem lies not in the introduction of exotic plants, but in the proper management and cultivation of indigenous species, particularly the pioneer legumes that are the natural colonizers of these disturbed and degraded lands.
