LORENTZ ATTRACTOR BEHAVIOR IN A CONTINUOUSLY STRATIFIED BAROCLINIC FLUID

Abstract:
The amplitude evolution equations for weakly non-linear waves in a continuously stratified and sheared baroclinic flow are shown to be transformable, in the presence of small dissipation, to the Lorenz equations. More realistic models lead to evolution equations, different from, but with interesting similarities with, the Lorenz equations. © 1980.
