BIOLOGIZED GLOBALIZATION: OVERWEIGHT AND OBESITY IN INDIA

Abstract:
Overweight and obesity rates have increased in India. The concept of nutrition transition has been used to explain the shift away from a diet high in fibre and common carbohydrates towards more energy-dense diets that are high in sugars, refined foods, and saturated animal fats as well as a move towards a more sedentary lifestyle. This paper describes the process of transition in India. It begins by reviewing the prevalence of obesity in developing countries as well as identifying regional trends. It then proposes a new theoretical framework on biologized globalization that can be used to study developing countries, and applies it to the case study of India to describe the process of dietary and lifestyle change in the new global economy. © Serials Publications.
