THE EMERGENCE OF PARAMAGNETISM IN TRANSITION-METAL CARBONYL CLUSTERS
- Abstract:
- Magnetic susceptibility and EPR measurements are reported for 21 osmium clusters containing between 3 and 40 osmium atoms and an even number of electrons. Clusters of nuclearity lower than ten are diamagnetic, having temperature-independent magnetic susceptibilities and no EPR spectra. All those having higher nuclearities (≫ 10) are paramagnetic, showing an EPR spectrum and a temperature-dependent susceptibility following Curie law behaviour. A molecular-orbital framework for understanding the electronic structures of clusters having nuclearities from two to infinity is presented and used to explain the emergence of the spontaneous paramagnetism in the larger clusters as well as its absence in the bulk metal. © 1987.
