A tripartition of complementizers: exploring clause size in Romance
- Abstract:
- This article presents a crosslinguistic study of Romance infinitival complementizers a and de. The proposal is that a/de are acategorial and can be merged in various positions in the CP-field, the TP-field, and the vP-field. Furthermore, we demonstrate that clause size varies extensively from one environment to the other, and from one language to the other, which leads us to argue against a one-size-fits-all approach.
