Capital markets and financial intermediation

Abstract:
Ten papers, presented at a conference held by the Fundacion Banco Bilbao Vizcaya and the Centre for Economic Policy Research in San Sebastian, Spain, in March 1992, examine financial intermediation in light of the integration of financial markets in Europe and the possible emergence of a single European currency. Papers focus on efficient governance structure--implications for banking regulations; bank loan maturity and priority when borrowers can refinance; stock markets and resource allocation; international capacity and financial collapse; financial intermediation and economic development; creditor passivity and bankruptcy; enterprise debt and economic transformation; bank regulation, reputation, and rents; relationship banking, deposit insurance, and bank portfolio choice; and competition and bank performance. Mayer is at the University of Warwick, the Centre for Economic Policy Research, and the European Science Foundation Network in Financial Markets.
