PREDICTION AND PERFORMANCE

Abstract:
Prediction is the process by which the expected behaviour of a construction or soil element is estimated. This process is distinct from design which must allow for extreme and unlikely events. The importance of adopting a suitable soil model for satisactory predictions is illustrated well in the Symposium proceedings. A recognition of the dramatic reduction of soil stiffness with increasing strain, even within the region for which a soil is conventionally treated as elastic, is essential if the quality of predictions for certain classes of problem is to be improved. Several of the Symposium papers dealing with the general subject of deep excavations indicate that soil movements associated with construction procedures can be significant.
