Sophocles Sublimis

Abstract:
In this article I deal with the 16th century Latin translations of Sophocles. I show how the ad verbum and literary translations can be interpreted in a literary sense. I examine the attribution of replies and line marks in translations, and I show how textual issues influence the interpretation. I compare the words used to translate the political terms in the Oedipus at Colonus, proving how the different translations deal with the political theme in different ways. I also compare the translation of the Ode of Colonus and I suggest its link with the concept of sublime.
