OBJECTIVES: Despite recent major advances in the understanding of the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis, with tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNFalpha) established as a major therapeutic target, comparatively little is known about the mediators involved in the destructive and inflammatory pathways in osteoarthritis (OA).
