Book section : Chapter

Derek Parfit as I knew him

Abstract:
Written by a philosopher whose graduate work Derek Parfit supervised and who lived in the same house with Parfit for a number of years, this chapter describes some of the basic elements of Parfit’s character as the author observed them over the course of a friendship of almost forty years. These include his kindness, generosity, monomania about philosophy, asceticism, intellectual brilliance, and a range of attendant eccentricities that were both amusing and endearing. The accounts of Parfit’s various character traits are illustrated by a wealth of anecdotes from the author’s own experience. The chapter also offers some observations about the ways in which Parfit’s moral views informed his own life and action.
