Drystane Dyking: an interview with Martin Tyler
- Abstract:
- Dry stone walling is both a local and a global craft. This interview explores how this ancient constructive craft is practiced in Perthshire in the Highlands of Scotland today. The distinctive geology and terrain of this region shape the extracted materials, tools and methods of making known locally as ‘drystane dyking’. Martin Tyler provides insights into his own training and experience as a dry stone waller. His evocative voice captures the distinctive terminologies and forms particular to this region of Scotland. This conversation reflects upon how the practice of dry stone walling affordsa located understanding of the history, heritage, current practice, and future of global constructive crafts.
