Beyond the Article: Frontiers of Editorial and Commercial Innovation

Abstract:
This report looks at innovative journalism formats that do not fit the traditional article template. The report is not intended to be an exhaustive review of all of the non-traditional formats that news organisations are pursuing but instead focuses on three general areas: highly distributed publishing, messaging apps and chatbots, and the development of new forms of visual journalism including mobile-first video and virtual reality. Through case studies involving these formats, the report explores how all of the innovations involve content distribution beyond the publishers’ primary platforms. The case studies also demonstrate content formats that span the range from super-short, shareable content to high-investment, long-form video formats, which allow us to study newsrooms that range from 10 staff to more than a thousand. The cases also highlight the ongoing decline of display advertising and the rise of sponsored content, native advertising and commercial partnerships.
