Lacunae
- Abstract:
- Lacunae are gaps in texts, which may be due to a number of causes, each illustrated in the chapter: (a) damage suffered by an extant manuscript, as is regularly the case with texts preserved on papyri or in palimpsests; (b) damage to an exemplar higher up the tradition (this has resulted in the total loss of most classical literature); (c) deliberate selection of only a portion of text; (d) omission of a passage for some mechanical reason, for example a whole page or line, or where the text has repeated phrasing; (e) accidental omission of a word or passage in copying.
