The aesthetic life

Abstract:
A commonplace assumption in welfare theorizing is that aesthetic engagement is a fundamental human good. In this paper, I tackle a different question: can the fact that a life itself is of aesthetic value be a benefit to the person who lives it? I argue that this question is not only interesting in and of itself, but also sheds substantial light on a range of debates over substantive welfare theories, including objective list and narrativist views.
