Parenting Early Intervention Programme evaluation - DFE-RR121A

Abstract:

Behaviour problems during early and middle childhood are associated with antisocial behaviour during adolescence and increase the risk of negative outcomes in adulthood. Successful parenting is a key element in preventing children developing behavioural difficulties. However, parents differ in the internal and external resources on which they can draw. Internal resources include their own mental well-being and resilience. External resources include poverty, social disadvantage and the absence of a support network.

The recent Allen Report (2011) stressed the need to use effective methods of early interventions, including parenting programmes. There is now strong evidence from rigorous efficacy trials that parenting programmes can improve parenting skills and, as a result, reduce children’s behavioural difficulties. Evidence is also necessary to show their effectivenesswhen programmes are implemented on a large scale, in community settings. This report presents the evidence for the effectiveness of the national roll out of parenting programmes in England.
