- Provides an overview of the economic theory relevant to privatization and a comprehensive examination of the Thatcher government program in the United Kingdom. Part 1 presents theoretical perspectives on ownership and incentives, competitive forces, and regulation that have a bearing on the relative performance of private and public firms. Part 2 assesses the privatization policies implemented in the United Kingdom between the summer of 1979 and the fall of 1987, and discusses public enterprise; an overview of the privatization program; selling state assets and the stock market; telecommunications; energy industries; transport industries; and the water industry. Vickers is Roy Harrod Fellow in the Economics of Business and Public Policy at Nuffield College, Oxford. Yarrow is Fellow and Tutor in Economics at Hertford College, Oxford.
