The British Empire, 1870-1914: A Waste of Money?

Abstract:

A long tradition of doubt about the economic rationality of the British empire culminates in L. E. Davis and R. A. Huttenback's Mammon and the Pursuit of Empire. They argue that private returns to British investors in empire were often inferior to those offered elsewhere and that defense costs were disproportionately high.
