Fighting words: journalism under assault in central and eastern Europe
- Abstract:
- This study surveys journalists in central and eastern Europe to identify areas of pressure in their work. It identifies a media ownership, attacks by politicians, deteriorating legal environment, a lack of solidary and attacks by other rival journalists as the key difficulties facing independent journalists. It proposes possible solutions including the creation of domestic and international solidarity networks and a focus on rebuilding trust with the general public.
