GROWTH OF ORDERED BAO OVERLAYERS ON MGO(001)

Abstract:
Ordered BaO overlayers have been grown on MgO(001) by successive cycles of Ba deposition, oxygen exposure and high temperature annealing. XPS was used to quantify the Ba coverage. The overlayers adopt the lattice spacing characteristic of bulk BaO for coverages in excess of 3 monolayers. Owing to the near equality between a0(BaO) and 2a0(MgO) the {20} LEED spots from BaO lie close to {11} spots from the substrate. Ionic model calculations confirm that the surface structure proposed for BaO on MgO is energetically favoured with respect to alternative configurations. © 1988.
