Complex cardiac surgery is one of the largest users of blood component stocks with approximately 20 to 40% of patients needing a transfusion during their hospital stay. Transfusion risk is increased further with the use of cardiopulmonary bypass, associated with a multifactorial coagulopathy and increased microvascular bleeding post bypass.
