ADAPTING THE CERN PS BOOSTER TO OXYGEN ACCELERATION.

Abstract:
The inclusion of the CERN proton synchrotron (PS) booster in an oxygen ion acceleration program is discussed. Features of this project include: (1) development of high-sensitivity instrumentation and low-level electronics to handle some 10**8 charges; (2) RF gymnastics to cover the large frequency range; and (3) operation of the ion program while continuing to provide the other users with protons. New instrumentation, such as several types of beam transformer, is described. The extension of the radial position and phase detection systems toward low intensities, enabling the beam to be accelerated in closed loop, is described.
