Report
What does the public in six countries think of generative AI in news?
- Abstract:
- This report presents online survey data on how people use generative artificial intelligence (AI), and what they think about its application in journalism and other areas of work and life across six countries (Argentina, Denmark, France, Japan, the UK, and the USA). They key findings are that (i) ChatGPT is the most widely recognised and used generative AI product, but few use it frequently, (ii) most of the public expect generative AI to have a large impact on virtually every sector of society in the next five years, but there is significant variation in whether people expect different sectors to use AI responsibly. Finally, (iii) people expect generative AI to make news less trustworthy and less transparent, but more up to date and (by a large margin) cheaper for publishers to produce. However, much of the public are unsure about what the impact of generative AI will be.
