Imitating the Watchers: Restoring the angelic life of Adam in early Syriac thought

Abstract:

Early Syriac writers often associate the prelapsarian state of Adam with the nature of angels, and advocate the imitation of angels by believers in the present age. Building on Winfrid Cramer’s 1965 study of Ephrem’s ideas about angels,1 the present essay explores themes of resemblance between Adam, angels, and righteous human beings in the works of St Ephrem (d. 373).
