The many uses of folio “III 198”: book culture and lived religion in early medieval Turfan
- Abstract:
- This Document of the Month examines the Manichaean manuscript fragment III 198 from Turfan (China), arguing that its significance extends beyond its canonical text and celebrated colophon. By focusing on three marginal inscriptions left by lay Manichaean readers, it reasons that this manuscript actively functioned in religious life as more than just a repository of doctrine.
