The informal diplomacies of Oswald Veblen

Abstract:: Saunders Mac Lane described Oswald Veblen as a "mathematical statesman". Here we examine four episodes of Veblen's international statesmanship and extract from them a particular collection of personal qualities, interpersonal skills, and tools that characterize his effective mathematical diplomacy.
