Re-reading as contemplation: the political theologies of Augustine and Cicero as sources for Thomas Aquinas's account of Rreligio
- Abstract:
- This article investigates the role played by Cicero and Augustine in Aquinas's account of religio, in conversation with the original historical and textual contexts of the specific Ciceronian and Augustinian sources that Aquinas employs. Although originally in tension, both Ciceronian and Augustinian accounts of religio continued to influence medieval and early modern understandings of the relationship between religion, nature, and political identity. By introducing the concept of ‘potential parts’ and the distinction between ‘elicited’ and ‘commanded’ virtues, Aquinas is able to present an account of religio that, while indebted to Cicero and Augustine in different ways, remains uniquely his own.
