The normal state gap in 1 and 2 layer cuprates

Abstract:
The opening of the spin gap in Hg 1201 samples of different doping has been investigated using 17O NMR. For overdoped samples no gap is observed above Tc, whilst for lower doping a gap opens above RT but the behaviour appears to be qualitatively different from the bilayer compounds. There is a strong reduction in the susceptibility as the doping decreases below optimal.
