The Ancient Tantra Collection from Sangyeling

This is the output of a John Fell OUP Research Fund project that ran from 01/11/2012 until 31/01/2014. Its purpose was to digitise a rare colection of Tibetan manuscripts from Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh, India, called the Sangs rgyas gling manuscript of the rNying ma’i rgyud ‘bum. Originally in 46 volumes, only 43 still survived in April 2013, when the photography was done. All photography was done at Teli and Shorbi village, Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh, supervised by Mr Ngawang Tsepag, of the Shantarakshita Library, Central University for Tibetan Studies, Sarnath, India. A total of 16,071 pages were successfully photographed. A Canon digital camera was used, producing both RAW and JPEG images simultaneously. Detailed notes were taken of each volume, and added to the data set in text files. A short introduction was also written. This project successfully photographed all surviving 41 volumes and 16,071 pages of a rare and endangered early 18th century manuscript edition of Tibetan 'Old Tantras' located at Sangs-rgyas-gling dgon-pa, Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh, India. Given the paucity of surviving canonical collections of this type, the publication of this accessible electronic edition is a welcome new resource for those engaged in the study of Tibet's 'Old Tantras'.
