Eschatological rivers of fire and purgatorial purification in sixth-century Syriac texts

Abstract:
This article investigates the appearance of eschatological rivers and seas of fire in late 5th-century and 6th-century Syriac texts written by Jacob of Sarug (d.521) and Daniel of Ṣalaḥ (fl. 542), and also in Syriac texts pseudonymously attributed to Ephrem and Balai. These rivers may be places of punishment in Gehenna, barriers to Paradise, or the means of purification (often set in relation to the Last Judgement). Comparanda from Jewish, Iranian, Greek, and Coptic sources are introduced, to see whether these are sources for the Syriac texts, or simply provide a background and context for their ideas.
