Aeschylus Agamemnon 440 πυρωθὲν ψῆγμα: πυρόω, fire-testing/refining and Greek lexicography
- Abstract:
-
The image behind Aeschylus Agamemnon 440 πυρωθὲν ψῆγμα is drawn from metallurgy: πυρόω, notwithstanding the linguistic objection raised by Fraenkel, is the vox propria in Greek for the process known as cupellation. Neglected linguistic evidence from both literary and inscriptional texts is quoted to substantiate the claim. The alleged Septuagintal meaning of πυρόω (translation of Hebrew ף ַר ָצ (must be thus revised and further qualified. Examples from the Septuagint are cited.
