Why matter matters to neo-Aristotelian teleology in mechanics
- Abstract:
-
Simple mechanical systems that include feedback can easily manifest teleonomy, although it is widely accepted that there is no place for genuine teleology within a naturalistic metaphysics. In this article I argue that chaotic systems, in fact, provide examples of irreducible neo-Aristotelian teleology in mechanics, but only when their behavior is considered in terms of changes of large objects in a phase space, with aspects that can be mapped to the notions of matter and form.
