Ivory in West Africa, c. 100 to 1900 CE: archaeological evidence and future research priorities

Abstract:
This paper reviews the evidence for the production and exchange of ivory objects from archaeological sites across West Africa, as well as evidence of African ivory from other contexts such as shipwrecks. We discuss the potential of using analytical techniques to reveal the geographical origin of these ivories, which can extend our understanding of human-ivory relationships in West Africa and the wider Atlantic world from the late medieval period onwards.
