Time use surveys in East Asia
- Abstract:
- East Asian societies have witnessed rapid economic and social developments in the last few decades. Time use data are ideal resources for charting these developments and forecasting social trends. Several East Asian societies have a long history of collecting time use data. In this chapter, we will outline the history, methods, and characteristics of time use surveys conducted in Japan, the Republic of Korea, China, and Taiwan. We will also introduce a data harmonization project, which harmonizes East Asian time use data and makes them compatible for international comparative research. We will illustrate the usefulness of the harmonized data by showing the gender gaps in paid work and unpaid work in the four East Asian societies.
