Qinsgong sanceng xitat duing xintan

Alternative title:
A new exploration of the underground wells of the three-storey stages in the Qing Palace
Abstract:

Due to the scarcity of archival records, ambiguities in theatrical texts, and the lack of conclusive evidence from the extant architectural remains, the precise number, structure, and operation of the "earth-hole" (dijing 地井) in the three-tiered stage of the Qing court remains unclear. Scholars' interpretations and discussions have differed due to the varying source materials they have relied upon. Drawing upon a range of materials, including the performance manuals for the court playThe Precious Raft of Ascending Peace (Shengping baofa 昇平宝筏), official architectural blueprints (Yangshilei 样式雷), and fieldwork records of extant stages, this paper seeks to resolve longstanding divergences and misconceptions regarding the number and structure of the "earth-hole", while addressing gaps in the understanding of the three-tiered stage in the Qing court. Furthermore, the paper aims to use the "earth-hole" as a case study to foster interdisciplinary discussions among literary studies, theatrical performance, and stage architecture.
