Future energy mix and transport
- Abstract:
- This chapter analyses future energy mix options for a more sustainable transport system. The chapter takes an integrated approach by assessing key issues between energy use and transport and different supply side opportunities for decarbonizing transport. Key issues behind increasing energy use in transport include economic activity, population growth, urban migration, demographics and increasing demand in emerging economies. These drivers will influence future energy demand and transport systems. The energy mix is then assessed, covering conventional oil, gas and nuclear as well as important renewable options and implications surrounding future electricity supply. The chapter closes by highlighting the link between transport and energy security, prompting the need for fuel diversification in light of climate policy.
