Hypothermic Machine Perfusion in Liver Transplantation—A Randomised Trial and Beyond
- Abstract:
- Machine perfusion technology is at the centre of efforts to improve the utilisation of higher-risk donor organs in all areas of solid organ transplantation, with innovations addressing different temperatures, perfusates and perfusion systems. The publication of a high-quality randomised trial of oxygenated hypothermic machine perfusion from a European multi-centre collaboration is an important milestone in this evolution. This study addresses one of the key limitations in DCD liver transplantation, and has shown evidence of an important reduction in the incidence of clinically diagnosed non-anastomotic biliary strictures in DCD liver transplants.
